LM2596 is a step down (buck converter) regulator IC. This regulator is available in the fixed output voltage of 5V version and is capable of driving a 3A load with excellent line and load regulation.
This regulator is specially designed to minimize the use of external components to simplify power supply design. It is a switch mode voltage regulator, so provides comparatively more efficiency.
